Empowering Self-Management with SelfBack

Low back pain is considered the leading cause of disability and negatively impacts everyday life - self-management is a recommended first-line treatment, and mobile apps are a promising platform to support self-management of conditions like low back pain. The Chiropractic Association of Alberta (CAA) and the University of Alberta have partnered to launch a pilot study of the SelfBack app - an innovative tool from Denmark that empowers low back pain patients with self-management.

In the first phase of this pilot, chiropractors will gain access to valuable insights that enhance patient care and engagement, laying the groundwork to expand SelfBack’s reach and elevate back pain management standards across the province.

What is SelfBack?

SelfBack is a digital decision support system made available for the user via an app intended to support tailored self-management of nonspecific low back pain. SelfBack offers:

The provided exercises and advice will be tailored to each person based on the symptom state and a range of patient characteristics, including information collected through a questionnaire embedded in the tool to track outcome measures. The tool provides a clinician dashboard to allow chiropractors to have insight into patient behaviours outside of the clinical environment.

Pilot Study Status

Today, 15 chiropractors across Alberta are recruiting patients to participate in the research study. The patient recruitment period began July 1, 2024 and will end November 30th, 2024, providing enrolled patients access to SelfBack services for a six-month period.

Phase two of this pilot study will begin December 1st, 2024 as data is collected from patients utilizing SelfBack and the results chiropractors see. This phase will last six months to give chiropractors enough information to draw conclusions from.
